Gawd, is it horrible that I think I might have been an overgifter for decades, and only have realized it today, reading this?!

I’m that person who gets to Christmas, looks at everything I’ve bought, then ends up gifting only 2/3 of it, because I’ve found waaay too many of the PERFECT things 😭

Is it about me? Yes it is. But, phew, it’s also about love and thoughtfulness and care. So I guess I’ll just focus on those aspects as I try try try not to shop my face off!

I *loved* this piece. This is me. My moment of reckoning was last Christmas, when my husband opened a gift I'd given him only to look up, confused, and tell me I'D LITERALLY BOUGHT HIM THE SAME LP LAST YEAR.

I like to think I'm very good at gifts. It's so important to me that the people I love feel seen. But also it's so much pressure to do this on demand, rather than seeing something that reminds you of someone and picking it up. Idk, I've tried it this way, too, and held onto things for years because I got some idiosyncratic book for an acquaintance. Like you said, Am I in a gift-giving relationship with this person? Um, no.

I think your writing makes me feel seen, so thanks for that gift, Emily.
