Design Trend of the Month: Disco Mirror
We are living in a feedback loop of distorted reality, so let's look for joy everywhere.
Halle Berry always brings it on the red carpet, and her Oscars look was definitely tapped in — an organic mirror ball motif that screams you ARE the party.
To me, the entire mirror thing can be read in a few ways:
Are we all living in a Black Mirror reality where nothing is as it seems and technology is destroying the fabric of human connection?
Or is it all about a return of 1970s style, disco culture, and a desire to have some joy, ANY JOY, at a time when it seems hard to find?
Maybe is it all just a reflection of everyone’s obsession with themselves a kind of here-you-go-Narcissus moment?
Or is it an f-you to paparazzi, shining the flash back at them?
Here are some other ways to bring mirror ball magic to a room
Digital Art Prints
My friend Jess of Hold That Punch makes digital art prints featuring mirror ball motifs, like this framed cowboy hat in a home’s entrance. I really believe that the first thing you see inside a home sets the tone for how a home dweller wants to feel about themselves, and this one says: “Dazzle me, life!” Change up the frame to suit and it can fit pretty much anywhere.
Mushroom decor
Have we reached peak mushroom yet? Probably not. It’s a fabulous form in all of its incarnations (there’s an entire mushroom shop at Terrain) and there is a mushroom to suit every style mood. Mushroom mirrors are really everywhere, even at Wal-Mart (ew) but this is the original one by Sofiest Designs, likely the highest quality you can find.
WTF moments
Happy mirror moments!
But seriously, WTF is going on there?
A. I adore that mushroom. B. The concept that we’re hearkening back to the 70s for a grab at some joy caught my imagination. I might need to watch some late season Mary Tyler Moore.
