Emily. Fantastic. Makes me remember being told and enforced 'child should be seen NOT HEARD" And now I can thank my young self for discovering to read. Then discovering that I could Write. Those marks on paper meant I can talk, I can scream, I can sing as loud as I want to and often as I want to because it was all to myself.
i think i have read this a few times and still seem to find hidden gems. i 2nd Rebecca re health and home ... not in the feng shui way but intuitively if that is applicable ~
Question on truthfulness: did you actually take yourself to Pur Vida and have a imaginary conversation with your remembered 9-year-old self? Mumbling to yourself like a crazy lady? or scribbling in a journal. Need to know how it's done in case I want to try it.
I wrote my personal version of Lorrie Moore's hilarious "How to Become a Writer" awhile back. "My Little Diary" was involved. Also boys and horses and a novel that died after a killer first sentence.
Stunning writing, Emily. I'd love to hear more from you about your health journey and how it relates to your perception of home -- this is so interesting to me.

My parents had that saying as well... what a loss--for them and for us kids.
You are an inspiration, Mike. I want to be a cultural agitator as long as you have been!

Hmmm... interesting. I've been thinking about: How do I make a home for x here. In this case, health. It's an important question.
Love this! All of it.

Yes I did! But I wrote in a journal. I think it’s more about conjuring the image and speaking into it more than speaking at it haha.
I am going to try it. Flying to Oakland tomorrow. Maybe I'll take her on her first plane trip, see what she thinks.
